Phone battery draining fast: the real causes, ranked

A phone that used to last all day and suddenly doesn’t has a specific cause, and your phone already tells you what it is — most people just never open the screen that shows it. Start there, then work down.

Start with the battery usage screen

On both Android and iPhone, Settings > Battery lists what drained the battery since the last full charge, ranked. This is the single most useful screen for this problem. If one app you didn’t use much is near the top, you’ve found it. If the screen is the biggest item, that’s normal — jump to the display section below.

If a background app is the cause

  • Android: tap the app in the battery list, then set it to Restricted background usage. Social, messaging, email and cloud-sync apps are the usual offenders.
  • iPhone: Settings > General > Background App Refresh — turn it off for apps that don’t need to update in the background.
  • A recently-installed app that shot to the top is worth deleting and reinstalling, or removing entirely.

If the screen is the biggest drain

The display is usually the largest single power draw, so a few settings make a real difference:

  • Lower brightness or turn on Adaptive/Auto brightness.
  • Shorten screen timeout to 30 seconds.
  • Turn off Always-On Display if you don’t use it.
  • On phones with a 120 Hz screen, “Adaptive” or 60 Hz refresh saves meaningful power.
  • Dark mode helps on OLED/AMOLED screens (most modern phones).

If it drains worst on the move or in poor signal

A phone hunting for signal burns battery fast. If drain spikes in a basement, a rural area, or on the train, that’s why. In a known dead zone, turning on Airplane Mode (or Wi-Fi calling where you have Wi-Fi) stops the phone exhausting itself searching. Leaving GPS/location on “always” for many apps also adds up — set location to “while using” for apps that don’t need it constantly.

When it’s the battery itself (hardware)

Batteries wear out. If the phone is three or more years old, drains fast and the drain is spread evenly across everything (not one app), the cell has likely lost capacity. Check battery health:

  • iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Below ~80% maximum capacity, a battery replacement restores most of the life.
  • Android: newer versions show battery health under Settings > Battery; otherwise a sudden drop in runtime plus a phone that gets warm at rest is the tell.

When to stop and get help

If battery health is low, a replacement battery is one of the best-value repairs there is — often a fraction of a new phone, and it fits the “keep what you have working” approach. Frequently asked questions

Does closing apps save battery?

Usually not. Modern phones freeze background apps efficiently, and force-closing an app you’ll reopen shortly can use more power relaunching it. Restricting a genuine background offender is different and does help.

Should I let the battery drain to 0% to “recalibrate”?

No. Lithium batteries prefer to stay between roughly 20% and 80%. Regular deep discharges shorten their life.

Did a software update cause it?

Sometimes a new update runs background optimisation for a day or two and settles down. If heavy drain persists more than a couple of days after an update, treat it as a background-app problem and use the battery usage screen.
