Screen flickering: is it software or hardware?

Quick Fix
01 Do the Task Manager test: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Task Manager also flickers, it's the display driver or refresh rate (software). If it does not flicker, a misbehaving app is the cause.

Screen flicker has two very different causes — software (drivers, settings, a bad app) and hardware (a loose cable or failing panel) — and the fixes don’t overlap. So diagnose first, then fix.

The two tests that tell you which it is

  • Task Manager test. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). If it flickers along with everything else, the problem is the display driver or refresh rate. If Task Manager stays steady while the rest flickers, a specific app is at fault.
  • Safe Mode test. Boot into Safe Mode (Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup). If the flicker stops in Safe Mode, it’s almost certainly software.

If it’s software

1. Update or roll back the graphics driver

A corrupted or outdated graphics driver is the single most common cause. Get the current driver straight from the GPU maker (Intel, AMD or NVIDIA) or your laptop manufacturer. If the flicker started right after a driver update, roll it back instead: Device Manager > Display adapters > your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.

2. Check the refresh rate

Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Set the refresh rate to the panel’s rated value (usually 60 Hz, or 120/144 Hz if the laptop supports it). A rate set too low, or higher than the panel supports, causes flicker.

3. Find the bad app

If the Task Manager test pointed to an app, think about what you installed recently. Older utilities and some monitoring/overlay tools are common culprits — update or uninstall the suspect.

If it’s hardware

If the flicker survives Safe Mode, worsens when you move or flex the screen, or shows lines and colour distortion, it’s physical:

  • Test with an external monitor. Plug the laptop into an external display. If the external screen is perfect, your laptop’s panel or its internal ribbon cable is the fault. If the external screen also flickers, the graphics hardware is suspect.
  • Flicker only at certain hinge angles points to a loose or failing display cable — a repairable part.

When to stop and get help

Panel and cable replacements are real repairs but often worthwhile on a laptop with life left in it. Price the repair against the machine’s value and remaining security-support window before deciding. If an external monitor works fine, you can also keep using the laptop as a desktop in the meantime.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my screen flicker only in one app?

That app is likely using hardware acceleration in a way your driver mishandles. Turning off “hardware acceleration” in that app’s settings often stops it.

Can a low battery cause flickering?

Rarely on its own, but power-saving can drop brightness/refresh in ways that look like flicker. Try it plugged in to rule that out.

Is flickering always fixable?

Software causes usually are. Hardware causes are repairable but cost money; the external-monitor test tells you which you’re dealing with.
