What actually kills laptops (and how to avoid it)
Laptops rarely die of old age — they die of neglect. Here’s what actually kills them, most common first, and the low-effort habits that prevent each.
1. Heat (the silent killer)
Sustained high temperatures cook components and batteries. The main causes are dust-clogged vents and fans and using the laptop on soft surfaces (beds, sofas, laps) that block the intakes. Prevention:
- Blow out the vents with compressed air every 3–6 months.
- Use it on a hard, flat surface; a cheap cooling pad helps if it runs hot.

2. Liquid
A single spill can end a laptop instantly by shorting the board. Keep drinks well away, and if a spill happens: power off immediately, unplug, remove the battery if you can, turn it upside down to drain, and get it to a repair shop — do not power it back on to “test” it.
3. A swollen or worn battery
Lithium batteries degrade with heat and time; a swollen battery (trackpad or case bulging, lid not closing flat) is a genuine safety issue — stop using it and get it replaced. Keeping the laptop cool and not leaving it at 100% in heat slows this.
4. Physical stress
- Drops — a decent case/sleeve and not carrying it by the screen go a long way.
- Charger-cable stress — cables fray where they meet the connector; don’t yank them, and don’t leave the cable bent sharply.
- Hinge wear — open it from the centre, not one corner.
5. Storage failure (on older machines)
A mechanical hard drive is a moving part that eventually fails. If your laptop still has an HDD, moving to an SSD is safer and faster — and a good moment to make sure your backups are in order, because drives fail without warning.
The one-minute maintenance routine
Every few months: blow out the vents, check the battery isn’t swelling, confirm your backup ran, and update the OS. That’s most of what keeps a laptop alive to 6–8 years.
