There’s no single number, but there are honest ranges. Build quality matters far more than brand loyalty, and how you treat it matters most of all.

Realistic lifespans by type

  • Premium / business laptops (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook, MacBook Pro): 5–8 years with care. These use better hinges, keyboards, cooling and serviceable parts.
  • Mid-range laptops: roughly 4–6 years before they feel slow or something wears out.
  • Budget / entry-level laptops: 3–4 years of comfortable use; they start struggling as software gets heavier.

What actually decides it

Two things end most laptops long before the plastic wears out:

  • Security support. A laptop is “done” for anything sensitive when its OS stops getting security updates. A 2015 machine stuck on Windows 10 hit that wall in October 2025. Check where yours stands in the support tracker — this matters more than raw speed.
  • Whether it’s upgradeable. A laptop that takes an SSD and more RAM can often be revived for years. One with everything soldered can’t.

How to extend it

  • Keep it cool and clean. Heat is the top killer — clear the vents every few months and don’t run it on soft surfaces.
  • Add an SSD and RAM if it’s still on a hard drive or 4–8 GB. It’s the cheapest way to buy 2–3 more years.

Honest signals it’s time to replace

  • Security updates have ended and no supported OS will run on it.
  • A repair quote approaches the price of a better used machine with support life left.
  • It can’t be upgraded and genuinely can’t keep up with what you need it to do.

Is it worth buying an extended warranty?

Usually not for the base coverage; accidental-damage cover can be worth it if you travel with it a lot. A good case and careful handling do more.
